MY BOSS SUCKS

Introduction
By Anne

Almost all of us have a boss and almost all of us wish we didn’t. My son, at around the age of 6, shared with me in a spate of anger, “You are not the boss of me!” We, as human beings, struggle almost as much with the idea of having a boss as we do with the real thing.

Let’s go back to the beginning. Most bosses, including us, didn’t set out to be bosses. We didn’t go to special boss school or boss camp. Most of us just “ended up” in the boss role, some of us by choice and others by the process of elimination. We may, as bosses, be the lesser of the evils or the best-in-class. Being a boss is a tough job, and chances are good that no one ever taught us how to do it.

If we go back to the beginning of your career, we will likely find that you didn’t choose your boss either. Most of you just “ended up” working for the boss you’re working for. You may have found that your boss is the lesser of the evils, or is the best-in-class. Your job – managing the relationship with your boss – is a tough job too. Chances are good that no one ever taught you how to do it.

Relationships with bosses are tricky because leadership is all about emotion. Most of us who are leadership trained were taught academic approaches that are rational. Unfortunately, leadership is not rational. Leadership is about the emotion created by you, your boss, and the situation in which you find yourselves. You are the only person who knows the emotional impact that your boss has on you. You are also the only person who can do anything about it. So what are you going to do about it?

If everything in leadership is specific to you, your boss, and your situation, why should you be reading this book? Because people learn from stories, and this book is chock-full of stories. Learning from a story means you won’t need to learn as much through your own experiences. It’s a shortcut, and a good one. We don’t all need to beat our heads against a brick wall to know that it hurts. We can watch others and learn from them.

We did plenty of learning to get these stories! We didn’t win in all of them, and you may not win in all of your learning stories either. We earned our lessons and we’re sharing them to spare you the pain. We’d like to learn from your lessons as well, which is why we’ve invited you to share your bosses-who-suck stories with us for the next book. We think there’s plenty of learning to go around, and we can’t wait to hear from you. Enjoy the ride!
